Ryanair is registered in Ireland, so it counts as an EU carrier and its flights are covered in both directions.

  • Departing an EU airport: covered by EU261.
  • Departing a UK airport: covered by UK261.
  • Arriving in the EU from outside Europe: covered by EU261, because Ryanair is an EU carrier.
  • Arriving in the UK from outside Europe: covered by UK261, which also protects arrivals on EU carriers.

How Ryanair handles claims

  • Ryanair strongly prefers claims through its own EU261 form and has, in its terms, required passengers to claim directly before involving a third party. That is exactly the model this tool fits: you send the letter yourself, in your own name, so there is no third party for them to object to.

  • They ask for the booking reference and the email address used at booking. A claim sent from a different email address to the one on the reservation frequently stalls, so use the original.

  • Ryanair is an Irish carrier. A Ryanair flight departing a UK airport is UK261; a Ryanair flight from Dublin, Madrid or Bergamo is EU261. The currency and the amount both change with it.

  • Rejections often cite ATC capacity or weather at a busy base. Because they fly the same routes many times a day, it is worth checking whether their own later flights on that route operated normally.

What a delay on Ryanair is worth

Computed by our rules engine, assuming arriving 4 hours late, no exemption claimed.
RouteDistanceRulesPer passenger
London (STN) → Dublin (DUB)471 kmUK261£220
London (STN) → Bergamo (BGY)977 kmUK261£220
London (STN) → Charleroi (CRL)334 kmUK261£220
London (STN) → Paris (CDG)359 kmUK261£220

Amounts are per passenger. The distance is the great-circle distance between the airports, which is what the Regulation uses — not the distance flown.

Ryanair: common questions

How much compensation can I get from Ryanair?

It depends on the distance and on which rules apply. Under EU261 it is €250, €400 or €600 per passenger; under UK261 it is £220, £350 or £520. Ryanair is registered in Ireland, so it counts as an EU carrier and its flights are covered in both directions.

Does Ryanair have to pay if the delay was caused by a technical problem?

Yes, in almost every case. The Court of Justice has held that technical problems — including sudden, unforeseen faults — are part of the normal running of an airline and are not extraordinary circumstances.

How long do I have to claim against Ryanair?

In Ireland, where Ryanair is based, the limit is 6 years, counted from the date of the flight. You can usually also claim where your flight departed or arrived, which may give you longer — for example six years in England and Wales.

Where do I send a claim to Ryanair?

Ryanair takes claims through an online form, and the postal address is Ryanair DAC, Customer Service Department, Airside Business Park, Swords, Co. Dublin, K67 NY94, Ireland. Check the address on the airline’s website before posting — claims departments move.

Can I claim for an old Ryanair flight?

Very often, yes. Most people do not realise claims last several years. Every disrupted flight is a separate claim, for every passenger on the booking.
